Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs are difficult to spot, and just because you may not see them does not mean that your premise is not infected, as the infestation may be in its early stages. Any bed bug infestation can quickly reach epidemic levels if not treated in a professional way. It takes just 10-12 weeks before the problem will reach the stage at which it becomes noticeable.

The dangers that bed bugs pose to your home and business:

Bed Bugs Potential harm that can be caused by bed bugs inhabiting your home:

  • Bed bug bites don’t hurt. It’s only the itchiness that results from the body’s reaction to them that causes discomfort. In certain cases, bed bug bites can also cause eczema and allergic reactions. Consult a pharmacist for advice and a bed bug remedy if this occurs.
  • If you are staying over at an establishment that has a bed bug problem, you might be at risk of taking bed bugs home with you.
  • Bed bugs are not only an inconvenience when it comes to the irritation that they cause, but also the associated cost of pest control treatment if they’re taken home.

The risks of bed bugs to your business:

All businesses dealing with the accommodation and transportation of people are at risk of becoming victims of a bed bug infestation. The best defense against the presence of bed bugs is to spot a problem as early as possible and avoid severe implications for your business, such as:

  • Customer complaints and negative word of mouth.
  • Damage to brand and reputation
  • Loss of profit due to the costs of dealing with a bed bug infestation
  • Possible legal proceedings

How to spot signs of a bed bug infestation:

It is difficult to spot the first signs of infestation without proper training. However, there are some obvious symptoms which, when found, clearly show that there is an infestation. These are:

  • Live bed bugs
  • Small blood spots on bed sheets
  • Faecal pellets and cast nymphal skins
  • A distinctive sweet and sickly smell
  • Clients / your family complaining from allergies that can take place due to bed bug bites.

Bed Bugs

How does a bed bug infestation occur?

  • Bed bugs enter a property by being carried on clothing or inside furniture.
  • The most common source of transferring bed bugs to your premises is by staying at a hotel with a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs or their eggs attach to clothing or suitcases and are then transported home. This could also be vice versa where guests bring in bed bugs via their luggage or belongings.
  • If there are any signs of bed bugs when staying at a hotel, particularly being bitten when sleeping or seeing blood spots on sheets, take great care in bringing your personal belongings home.
  • Consult with hotel management to assess the risk, or - if you’re a commercial client - ensure that your business launders, fumigates or treats clothes, bedding or furniture  to ensure they are safe.
  • The same applies in transferring furniture; Rentokil can treat furniture for bed bugs before you take it back to your home or business if there may be a risk.

How to Identify Bed Bugs and Bed Bug Bites:

  • Bed Bug Bites Adult bed bugs are 5mm long. Before feeding, they are a flattened oval shape and light brown, but become rounder and darker after feeding
  • They are usually found in bedrooms but hide in cracks and crevices during the day. The most common shelters for bed bugs are in the seams of mattresses, in crevices in the bed frame, behind furniture surrounding the bed (especially the headboard) or where the wall meets the floor.
  • Bed bugs usually bite neck, arms, legs and hands and bite during night time. They are attracted to the warmth of our bodies and carbon dioxide in our breath.
  • Bed bug bites are unlikely to wake the host as they inject an anaesthetic into the skin of the host whilst drawing blood.
  • Bed bug bites are generally small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin. Redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur on these spots. Several bites tend to appear in a line or row along an exposed area.
  • A small proportion of people can react very badly to their bites and develop a skin rash. The red spots which indicate the location of a bite may become raised and very itchy over time.

How to Get rid of Bed bugs

In Your Home

If you are worried that you may have brought bed bugs back home with you after your travels, there are a few things you can do to prevent them from spreading to your home:

  • Leave your luggage in your garage or in the bathroom, as bed bugs dislike tiles and concrete. However, if they are present, it is easier to spot them here than on carpeting.
  • Take your clothes off in the garage or bathroom and put them straight into the washing machine, and ensure that you wash and dry clothes at the highest possible temperatures.
  • As a precaution and if possible, put your suitcase out in the sun, away from the house for a couple of days to help get rid of bed bugs that might enter your home.
  • While vacuuming can’t ensure complete elimination, it can help to reduce the problem when bed bugs are clearly visible. (Be sure to empty and clean the vacuum to avoid transferring eggs to other rooms!)

In Your Hotel or Residence

Bed Bugs Signs With the number of guests moving in and out of your hotel or dorm rooms, it is impossible to completely prevent bed bugs. However, there are ways you can prevent an infestation taking hold and moving from room to room and that is via early detection:

  • We perform an in-depth survey of your premises to check for areas that may increase the risk of an infestation.
  • We will train your staff on how to spot the signs of a bed bug infestation and what to do should they spot them.
  • Ensure thorough checking for bed bugs forms part of your room cleaning processes.
  • Have a procedure in place for handling bed bug complaints.
  • Inspect adjacent rooms to identify if the bed bugs have spread (although Rentokil will do this as part of our emergency response survey).
  • Immediately contact Rentokil to arrange a thorough inspection and bed bug control program.

Bed bugs are very difficult to find and for this reason we recommend that you do not try to get rid of an infestation without professional help.
