The dangers of ants in the home and business:

Ants Why ants in the home are a pest:

  • As ants frequently travel through unsanitary areas before they end up on your countertops, they can contaminate foodstuffs.
  • Ants nest in areas such as walls or other undisturbed places and produce piles of soil that can be seen alongside walls.

Ant Fact: Ants can lift and carry more than fifty times their own weight!

Why your Business needs Ant Control:

  • Loss: contaminated food and other products will have to be thrown away, costing money and resources.
  • Fear: In medical environments or care homes, patients can be alarmed by the presence of ants, and can question your hygiene standards.
  • Reputation: compromised health and hygiene can lead to lost trading revenue.

Think you might have an ant problem? How to spot the signs of an Ant Infestation:

  • Live ants on your property. If you have seen a large number of ants in the home or workplace, you might have an ant infestation. If you are seeing them in your kitchen, then you should need to take action - and fast.
  • Ant pathways in and out of your premises. Some types of ant will lay down a pheromone trail to a food source, which attracts other ants to find the food.
  • Ant nests: Small heaps of earth or dirt indicating ant nest sites. Some species of ant like to nest in walls or other quiet, dark places, which are more difficult to spot.

The most common Ant Species

Garden Ants Garden Ants (Lasius niger):

Worker ants are 4-5mm in length, but the Queen can be as big as 15mm. Queens lay their eggs in the spring in nests that are typically in soil, but can be in brickwork or under bark. Garden Ants are attracted to sweet foods and leave a pheromone trail back to their nests for other ants to follow to the food source, which makes them a nuisance in the home or workplace.

Pharoah Ants Pharoah’s Ants (Monomorium pharaonis):

Worker ants are up to 2mm in length, and the Queen is 3.5-6mm in size. Both workers and the Queen are yellow-brown in colour. Pharoah’s Ants originate from the tropics and require artificial heat in order to survive and reproduce. An ant infestation usually takes place in heated buildings such as hospitals, hotels and blocks of flats. Their diet consists of decomposing food and they carry germs, picked up from where they have been feeding.

Fire Ants Fire Ants (Solenopsis spp):

Worker fire ants are 3mm in length, with the Queen double in size. They are reddish brown in colour and live in colonies of up to 100,000 or more ants! Each ant colony is led by a Queen who lays between 150 - 200 eggs per day. Fire ants build mounds of up to 60cm high to live in and these are usually built in open, sunny spaces. Fire ants sting both animals and humans and their sting is extremely painful.

How to get rid of ants

The majority of garden or black ants will only come indoors to forage for food and are attracted by sweet and sticky substances. Ensure that there is no readily available food source in your home and get rid of ants by:

  • Always cover food, and store food in airtight containers. We don’t know where the ant has been before it crawls across your food!
  • Clear away food and liquid spillages immediately and clean food debris from under kitchen appliances
  • Make sure all rubbish bins have tightly sealed lids
  • If you have pets around, clear away their food immediately after it has finished eating
